LOCKED: About Gyazo

I'm not a fan. It's a spammy little app with a massively spammy website, and I've encountered enough malicious ads on their site that I don't feel comfortable admining a website that links to them anymore.

Yes, AdBlock can protect against much of the problem. I run AdBlock. I had made the mistake of allowing some acceptable ads on my mobile the last time I encountered a Gyazo malicious ad. I know I can disable acceptable ads and/or report Gyazo's violation of the guidelines to solve this - but it's partly the principal of it. Plus, I don't trust others to be as on top of things as I am, so I'm back to not wanting to run a website that links to things potentially harmful to my users.

Besides not trusting Gyazo or wanting to associate our website with them, there's convenience...

And you get those nice embeds automagically. Granted, that doesn't apply to the shoutbox.. But if you click those links you get just a straight image, or a page with a single ad that gets blocked reliably if you use adblock, and hasn't gone malicious on me anytime I wasn't using adblock.

And yes, I did have to work a bit for that Imgur magic - but it makes life easier. I'd apply the same effort to Gyazo, but they aren't friendly to the attempts - they obfuscate things a bit to make it harder to scrape data from their site, and I'd have to write custom code to make an embedder. More effort than I'm willing to expend at this time.


tl;dr I'm thinking about banning Gyazo from the forums. Thoughts?

 

For future reference - not all ads are malicious, and if you feel they are or have reason to suspect they are, you should likely tweak settings in ABP more. Personally, I keep ALL ads blocked because I don't trust them.

Oh, and since we're going beyond paraphrasing what I said and completely changing it, 'no difference in convenience...' Well, look above. I, unlike some, have AdBlock working properly. I don't worry about ads. But next time I need to post 5 images and a couple paragraphs at once, I'll be sure to embed the image which only takes about a second longer, not just link them.

 

I'm just not doing it, Supplice. You fail to bring any new arguments or information to the table and instead attack the person posing an opinion that disagrees with your narrow worldview. I removed any reference to your name from my post, sorry my paraphrase missed your original intention. Wonderful to hear that you'll bother to embed images when relevant now. Other than that, I'm finished having this discussion with you.


Anyone else want to chime in with anything constructive, for or against? Learn some lessons from the master here and leave the personal attacks and e-peen demonstrations at the door.

 

I'll add that I really think it is a STUPID argument ANY TIME someone has to defend themselves with "it works fine if you ALSO use x, install y, or do z". This implies that the product in question has a FLAW that has to be compensated for. I keep seeing you say "oh, just install adblock" but, what if I don't want to? What if, instead, I prefer to use products WITHOUT ads unless I want to support them by viewing the ads they get revenue from? what if *gasp* someone uses a browser (say, on mobile?) that doesn't have adblock? Why is it that everyone everywhere must conform to YOUR use case?

Gorian sides on banning it, but purely because Greenshot has features and no real logic behind his reasoning. Just the typical "You should use the I use because it's better, ban everything else" logic.

"Gyazo is lazy" Opinionated statement, but I would agree - I don't want something complex or anything, I want something quick, simple, easy and light for fast screenshots. Inconvenient for you as a site admin in what way? You went through college right, you know how to expand on your arguments and reasons don't you? I just showed you I can embed it - links are much easier when I have to type out a lot so people don't scroll an entire page. As for 'potentially dangerous' - I'm about 1000000 percent certain I've seen far more Gyazo links and images than anybody else active on this site (possibly only Cryzark rivals me here since he showed me it) and I've NEVER seen me one, so somebody has something set up wrong or viruses.

@Gorian - Hypocritical much? Watch your AdBlock counter go up on this website (pr-gaming.net) and imgur. Both sites have ads and I recommend adblock for both sites, I recommend it for any use of internet period. To say Gyazo has suspicious/intrusive ads is going a bit far, as I've seen it without adblock and with it, it's never been bad. It sounds like something else is causing the issue. Thanks for that last line though,

I don't want some other program. Gyazo is perfectly for me and everybody else, it's simple, light, and easy to use. Why SHOULD I be forced to use Greenshot or whatever else? Good question. I also like applying that line to certain things outside of this case, too, that I'm sure you're aware of - but, you know, the 'no drama' clause.

 

I quit using Gyazo a while ago just because it annoyed me. I made a switch to ShareX which sounds familiar to the one @Gorian described in the shoutbox. It has tons of capture methods/shapes, hot keys, insta-saves to hard drive and uploads to whatever hosts you prefer (I use photobucket just because its simple). This combination works well for me.

Favorite Features:
-Screenshot PLUS screen recording
-Insta-saves to hd and copies to clipboard
-Upload to 30+ hosts one or all of them simultaneously
-Hotkeys on hotkeys on hotkeys
-Customizable after-capture-tasks such as annotating, adding effects, watermarking, uploading and other actions.
-Completely customize everything to your liking, no limits, and can do anything you would ever need it to and more.

 

This is clearly turning into a fight about "what image platform has the biggest dick" really fast and I gotta say, this is shameful. It should not matter about where the image is coming from as long as it's a source image, after that it shouldn't matter if it came from the pope's server rack or a methlab's server rack. If the image can be displayed as a page instead of with a page then it REALLY DOESN'T MATTER. You all should be ashamed and just post your goddamn images like this:

Well, as I explained it to CZ, I thought it was completely fucking retarded that somebody would go to such an extreme to ban Gyazo for something that nobody else has a problem with (ads) and embedding issues when I can prove it can easily be embedded and go straight to an image just by attaching .png and he agreed, hence his post.

And Gorian's agreeance with it, funny enough because of his post, comes from wanting people to use Greenshot. Here's the fucking thing, I use Windows 8, I have enough issues with my games - I don't need issues with my apps.

That's really not the point. If a decision has been made our members should be respectful enough not to behave like this or speak this way, least of all to Saib. I am actually a bit shocked.

As for "need", Saib's post demonstrates quite clearly, that just simply isn't true.

I'd recommend word press for your personal blogs should you absolutely NEED to share stuff via Gyazo.

I was respectful enough saying, "Whoa, that's a bit harsh." and getting completely shut down by, as Saib calls it, his narrow world view. He says I have no new arguments to bring to the table even though I countered everything he brought up against it and shredded his argument to shreds and he keeps repeating the same things over and over, thus I have ZERO reason to censor myself about the stupidity spewing from an otherwise very intelligent man that I respect very much. And based on your logic, if I decided to stop giving tards in TS such leeway as I do (ex: Montage, Jarabis) and ban them out right for all the rule breaking and trolling that happens and the warnings that get ignored, documented and undocumented, they have no right to speak up about it (or the rest of the community) - especially considering the things said the times Jarabis was banned? OKAY.

Again, as for need, Windows 8 is a POS operating system. Gyazo is the BEST choice for a tool like this, shoving one with loaded features and down my throat will just give me something I can't use and will annoy the hell out of me. AND WHY THE FUCK DO I NEED TO BE FORCED TO USE YOUR DAMN APP OF CHOICE WHEN I CAN LINK DIRECTLY TO AN AD FREE IMAGE AND EMBED IT?!?!

Liam absolutely has it right that there needs a poll. Read Saibs post, at least the tldr part. He is asking for peoples thoughts on the matter, yet surprise surprise, ignores the views disagreeing with it - and I honestly don't give a if its because I'm having a toxic attitude, I was being calm and polite originally and was still ignored.

This "discussion" is going nowhere, except for ad hominem. All parties involved (and I mean ALL PARTIES) failed to conduct themselves in a way that is productive. Because of this, I am going to put up a poll about this here: http://www.pr-gaming.net/threads/ban-keep-or-embed-source.846/

It runs for the next week.

Or, here's an idea: just embed all images using the sources, not the webpage that it goes to. Makes everything easier.
