I've recently installed a new CPU cooler since the Stock Cooler just wasn't doing it anymore cooling wise. My choice was the 212 Evo. Installation went fine and temperatures are a good 15° lower than my old cooler, with my CPU reaching a maximum of 52° in Prime95. However, when running a CPU-Intensive programm for a longer time, every 1-2 Minutes my Processor just clocks down from 4000Mhz per core to a mere 1400Mhz, which is pretty much Idle core speeds. This happens for a good 20 seconds before the core speeds go back up to 4000Mhz, rinse and repeat. Now, I have tried several things already: -I have ran several games and programms, all of them cause my Processor to slow down to Idle Core speeds after 1-3 Minutes -I have disabled both C6-State and Cool n' Quiet in my BIOS -I have checked if the heatsink was seated correctly on the CPU / If there was space inbetween the Heatsink and CPU I've googled the issue and people who had the same issue as me had it related to their CPU overheating and clocking down, however my FX-8350 runs cool as a cucumber. What do? Posting this for afriend, not a single clue what could be causing it.
eh. really with the CPU wars? lol as to the issue, you made sure to use thermal grease in-between the CPU and heatsink? There isn't like, a sticker or little plastic case in between the CPU and heatsink (sounds silly, but I've seen some pictures of people doing that). Maybe you could post a picture? Got some prime95 listed up there, so sounds like you know what you are doing, so that good Suuuure. That's what they ALL say

I'm an intel guy myself (all my friends work for intel, get me intel products, I'm a sysadmin for their LANFest events in the northwest, and run what was once the flagship $1000+ processor in my main desktop), but I have a few old computers that run AMD cores just fine (p4 era) still. The PSU is shot, but the CPU just works away. Yeah, there may be a quality difference - but it isn't so wide as to say Intel works and AMD doesn't.
Nope, not my rig. I have an i7 4770k. I think he may of found out the problem, his Vram could be overheating, but he's not entirely sure. I'll update the information tomorrow after school.
Get an IR thermometer. Indispensable. Like he's thinking, some other component might be overheating. Gorian's onto some ideas too - if the CPU isn't properly thermally coupled to the heatsink it'll chug along fine until it hits a certain thermal load, then it'll jump rapidly. Potentially faster than the update cycle for whatever monitoring software he's using. Then when the safety throttle kicks in, it rapidly cycles back down because only the core overheated, not the entire heatsink block. The lack of thermal mass means it cycles very quickly and might get missed in the monitors. i7 4770k here as well. I've gone Intel, AMD, Intel, AMD, Intel. Happy with Intel. Doesn't mean AMD is . Fanboyism in any form is tiresome.
